'I was never given an opportunity to spread the Gospel', street preacher speaks out after arrest

Speaking publicly for the first time since his detention on Saturday, Oluwole Ilesanmi also revealed he returned to the scene of his arrest shortly afterwards to resume preaching.

The 64-year-old said: "I was never given the opportunity of spreading the Gospel...the police came on the scene...I was taken out of the vicinity into a very remote place.

"I was thinking I would not even be able to get back but God raised up for me...people in the streets who could even be of assistance to me and I thank God that I came back and I started preaching again."

Earlier this week, the Metropolitan Police said its local Professional Standards Unit was reviewing Mr Ilesanmi's arrest after a complaint was made.

Footage of incident - viewed almost 2.4 million times online - draw concern for Christian public figures including the former MP David Burrowes.

The police force said Mr Ilesanmi was arrested "to prevent a breach of the peace" after "concerns" were raised about his behaviour. He was later de-arrested.

The film does not appear to reveal what Olu said while he was preaching. But a police officer accuses him of being "racist".

Meanwhile, the Christian Legal Centre - which has advised street preachers in the past - said it was supporting Mr Ilesanmi.

In a statement issued online, he said: "Olu was unnecessarily arrested, de-arrested and then dropped off in an unfamiliar suburb without enough money to get home."

Mr Ilesanmi added: "My appreciation goes to everybody all over the world that is so much concerned about me.

"Iam well. I am OK. No evil, as the word has said, will come near my dwelling. God has been so faithful."
