'I'm not super, super Christian, but I go to church' says Carey Mulligan

by Donna Birrell

Oscar-nominated actress Carey Mulligan says she's “very happy” to say she's a Christian who goes to church.

In an interview with The Times, the usually private star of films such as Maestro,  for which she is nominated for Best Actress, Far from the Madding Crowd and The Dig, says that although she wouldn't describe herself as a “super-super Christian”, she still goes to church having been brought up as a Christian.

The 38- year-old year old also said she had met her husband, singer-songwriter Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Sons, at a Christian summer camp when they were both aged 12. They reignited their friendship 15 years later and got married in 2012 at a ceremony officiated by Mumford’s parents, John and Eleanor who were leaders in the Vineyard Churches in the U.K and Ireland for more than 20 years.

Mumford has since spoken about his Christian faith in an article for the Vineyard Church website: "I grew up in a Christian home. My father had become a Christian when he was at Cambridge in the 1920s. Both my parents loved the lord and served in a local church. It’s where I grew up. I served with them as we went every Sunday as a family. We prayed together, read the Bible together, and that was entirely natural. It just never occurred to me to do anything else. It wasn't a chore; it was a wonderful heritage."

Mulligan and Mumford now have three children.

In her latest interview, Mulligan who has been Oscar-nominated three times, told The Times:

“I don’t think I would describe myself as super-super-Christian. But I was definitely brought up going to church and I still go to church, but it’s not, like, a hot topic. I’m very happy to say that I’m Christian and I go to church.”

As well as her nomination for Maestro, Mulligan has also received nominations by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Best Actress for her performances in An Education in 2009 and  Promising Young Woman in 2020.
