Hundreds of UK churches pledge to welcome Hong Kong citizens with open arms

Churches throughout the UK have signed up to help people settle in the UK from Hong Kong.

Thousands of people from the region are expected to move to the UK in the next few years because of increased oversight from China, with crackdowns on protests, journalism and free speech.

87,100 residents have left the former British colony, according to official statistics last week. Many have come to the UK, or plan to, as they have British National Overseas status meaning it is easier to work and start the process towards citizenship than it is for arrivals from other countries.

In anticipation of this, seminars have been run for Christians on how specifically to welcome people from Hong Kong into church. It advises that many people will need advice on renting or buying property, transport, the education system and potentially language help.

The website UKHK, set up to connect people with a local community, reads: "You will find a warm welcome both in Cantonese speaking churches and in English speaking churches.
The churches on the map also have many volunteers who have signed up to help people from Hong Kong (whatever their politics or beliefs) to settle into the UK."

It then gives a long list of churches who have signed up to welcome people from Hong Kong.

The Guardian says about 600 churches have signed up and the list shows churches from Brighton to Inverness, including independent, Anglican, vineyard and Baptist churches.

There is also a video about making friends in the UK, information about visas and help with using the NHS.
