Humans to blame for climate change, says report

Scientists have overwhelmingly concluded that pollution caused by humans is causing climate change.

A United Nations panel says it's very likely global warming is man-made, and is projecting sea levels could rise between 26 and 82 centimetres this century.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said heat waves are very likely to occur more frequently and last longer with wet regions receiving more rainfall, and dry regions receiving less, despite some exceptions. As the ocean warms, and glaciers and ice sheets reduce, the scientists think sea levels will also continue to rise, but at a faster rate than we have experienced for over the past 40 years. The five-year study which has been compiled by over 800 scientists and used 9,000 scientific studies also warns that continued emissions of greenhouse gases will cause further warming and changes. Experts also said limiting climate change will require substantial and sustained reductions of greenhouse gas emissions. According to the study, the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth's surface than any preceding decade since 1850.

Speaking to Premier's Des Busteed on the News Hour Andy Lester from Christian environmental group A Rocha UK says he wants believers to pressure the Government into taking action on the issue:

Other Christian charities responding to the report include Christian Aid, and Tearfund.

Tearfund's Advocacy Director Paul Cook said:

"This report gives further scientific backing to what our partner organisations around the world have been telling us: the climate is changing, and not in a good way.

"Droughts, floods and erratic weather are ruining crops and damaging communities.

"In 2009, world governments pledged to keep global warming below two degrees but this won't be possible if we continue with "business as usual".

"The time for governments around the world to act is now if we are to bless rather than curse our children and grandchildren."

Christian Aid said today's report proves the debate is over, it is now time to act.

Its Senior Climate Change Advisor Dr Alison Doig, said:

"Rising temperatures will bring enormous economic and human cost.

"We need to support countries and communities most at risk in preparing to cope with disaster, to lessen the impacts of extreme weather events and help communities recover more rapidly when they do occur.

"The implications of melting ice caps and rising sea levels for people and economies around the world will be enormous, but it is the poorest and most vulnerable people who depend on the land and sea for their living who will be most affected.

"The science is clear, we have a moral duty to act and the risk of not doing so is too great. This is our opportunity to create the world we want to live in."
