Hull churches team up to raise £15m in fundraising campaign

by Hannah Tooley

Beverley's two biggest churches; Beverley Minster and St Mary's Church are working with East Riding Council to engage more people.

Part of the campaign 'Two Churches: One Town' will try and raise money for Beverley Minster's £5.5 million repair work on leaking roofs and St Mary's £5.5m to restoration of crumbling stonework.

Beverley Minster is England's largest parish church, according to Historic England.

Rev Becky Lumley, from St Mary's Church, told Premier's News Hour it is worth investing in.

She said: "These buildings have been here nearly 1,000 years. We could buy something that was built tomorrow that won't last anywhere near that amount of time.

"In terms of investment they've been pretty extraordinary - there's also extraordinary visible forms of God's presence."

She said she hopes by visiting the churches people "might in some small way encounter the love of God."

"We've raised about £300,000" so far via an auction of promises she said.

Teddy bears were also parachuted off the roof of the church, "safely caught by their parachutes thankfully, that created a lot of excitement for the children."
