HTB pastor to reopen bombed church for Bristol's young people

Rev Toby Flint, formerly a lead pastor at Holy Trinity Brompton in London, is going to lead St Nicholas on Baldwin Street.

He said: "We're really excited to have been invited to reopen and restore St Nicholas Church to its original purpose, demonstrating the love of God.

"We want to build on the deep foundations of faith in the city, to reimagine church for a new generation and play our part in meeting the needs of the most disadvantaged in Bristol."

The setting for two major universities, Bristol has experienced at influx of students and young professionals in recent years. It is estimated 60 per cent of people living in the city centre are aged between 15 and 29.

Rev Flint (pictured with his wife, Gill) went on to say: "There are also real social challenges, such as homelessness, drug addiction and mental health issues.

"Many young people are exploring questions about their meaning and purpose but don't have a place to discuss them.

"We'd love St Nicholas to be a pressure-free space where people can explore faith for themselves."

Visitors arriving at the 10.30am launch service this weekend will be able to see the results of the first stage of a six-year refurbishment project costing £3.8 million.

Acting Bishop of Bristol, Rt Rev Lee Rayfield said: "As Bristol becomes younger and more diverse, we are looking to make a difference to the city which will last and spread out.

"We are confident that St Nicholas will affect people's lives for the better and contribute to social transformation."

Planting and revitalising other churches, developing leaders and promoting mission in Bristol will all form part of St Nicholas' remit, as a Church of England Resourcing Church.
