How the Church responded to the George Floyd killing verdict

by Kelly Valencia

Several church leaders have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the George Floyd verdict with an overall sense that justice has been served.

Ex-police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on Tuesday of murdering George Floyd after kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes.

The Archbishop of Canterbury said justice for George Floyd was “essential”.

US evangelist, Franklin Graham said “Our legal system has worked & justice is being served” and hoped “all of America & our law enforcement will learn from this, & that we'll become a better nation.”

CEO of Evangelical Alliance in the UK, Gavin Calver said that “the fight to end racism in all of it’s disgusting manifestations must continue.”

Founder of the 24/7 Prayer Movement, Pete Greig quoted Terrence Floyd, brother of George Floyd, and emphasised the role “#faith and the church has played behind the scenes in this fight for #justice.”

Speaking to Premier, writer and theologian Krish Kandaiah said he was “relieved” to see the verdict.

“I was so worried that the verdicts would go the other way. I know there were 3,000 police officers ready to break up crowds and demonstrations. It felt like a kind of touch paper that could ignite a really big response. And so, I was just relieved that it does seem that justice was done.”

A police investigation into police practices in Minneapolis has been launched following the verdict.
