'Hot pizza from the Archbishop!' Justin Welby's treat for mourners

by Donna Birrell

People waiting overnight in the queue to pay their respects to the Queen in central London say they were treated to a special surprise from the Archbishop of Canterbury.

As torrential rain fell on the hundreds of people who had already set up their bases besides the Thames at Lambeth Bridge yesterday evening, boxes of pizza arrived courtesy of Most Rev Justin Welby.

One of the recipients said:

"I haven't slept yet, it rained all night, but I'm glad I'm here. We've been given hot drinks, we have shared each other's snacks and we had hot pizza from the Archbishop!"

The head of the queue is directly outside Lambeth Palace, the official office and residence of the Archbishop.

Between now and the Queen's State Funeral on Monday, the queue to file past her coffin in Westminster Hall is expected to run all the way along the Embankment on the south side of the Thames, past Tower Bridge and the Tate Modern and will end at Southwark Park - a distance of four and a half miles.
