Hospice patient granted dying wish to be baptised

by Heather Preston

An elderly man in hospice care was granted his final request of being baptised before he died.

Jenis James Grindstaff was immersed in water at Spartanburg Regional hospice home, in South Carolina.

Due to Grindstaff's medical issues it was not possible to perform the ceremony in a traditional baptismal pool.

After telling staff he "didn't want sprinkles", Spartanburg healthcare got to work on finding a solution that would allow him to be fully submerged.

Nurses assisted the man into a 60 gallon medical tub where Chaplain Terrell Jones proceeded to perform the service.

With friends, family and care workers present Jones said a prayer.

"My beloved son, Jenis James Grindstaff, I now at this time baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and of the Holy Ghost, and in Jesus' name," she said.

A second hospice chaplain, Katie Harbin, poured a bucket of water over the man.

As Grinstaff lifted his head from the water he said: "that felt good" before being met with cheers and hallelujah's from those present.

Grinstaff was then transferred onto a stretcher and transported home by ambulance.

The hospice said they wanted to do everything they could to help Grindstaff fulfil his last wish.
