Actor Tom Pelphrey thanked God for 12 years of sobriety in his award speech at the Emmys on Monday.

After being named Outstanding Supporting Actor in a drama series for his role as Robbie Prendergast in the HBO series Task, Pelphrey said: “I thank God for my life and my sobriety. I thank my family and my friends for all your love and support all these years.”

Pelphrey, raised Catholic, has previously said faith is a "huge part" of his life. It was the inspiration behind voicing Jesus in the four-part podcast The Christ, released earlier this year.

Speaking to USA Today Entertainment, Pelphrey admitted to feeling “intimated” by the role. He hoped the podcast would resonate with audiences, “that in some small way, if it can deepen their faith or maybe pique their curiosity about a part of their faith that they want to look into more.”

Pelphrey has also shared how parenthood has helped deepen his faith.

“I do believe the closest that anybody can get to really understanding the love that God has for us is through having children,” he shared with CBN News. “That’s the only way that you can truly even come close to grasping how infinite the Lord’s love for us is.”

He said his recovery from alcoholism was a “miracle”, adding, “Truly by the grace of God, I felt I was freed from that obsession.”
