Hillary Clinton says Trump seeking to 'hijack' Christianity and the Bible for political gain

by Premier Journalist

2016 Democratic Presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, has accused President Donald Trump of trying to "hijack" Christianity after he posed with a Bible outside a church near the White House.

Clinton said that the moment, which drew outrage from a number of religious leaders across the US, was nothing more than a "photo opportunity" and insisted that Trump "can't tell you a single thing that's in [the Bible]."

She added: "That has been a pattern - he's tried to hijack Christianity and the Bible in ways that are deeply hypocritical and that was just another occasion."

Clinton also hit out at Trump for his labelling of Black Lives Matter protesters as "thugs," insisting that only a "tiny, tiny minority" of demonstrators turned to looting and vandalism. "He wanted to cast that over the millions of very thoughtful, non-violent peaceful protesters," she said.

The former Secretary of State and First Lady added: "There should be no tolerance for violent protest and certainly that was not at the core of the literally millions of people who have come out to protest peacefully over the last several weeks."

Mr Trump has not talked a huge amount about his personal religious beliefs since taking office. When asked about his favourite verses of the Bible in an interview prior to announcing his candidacy for the 2016 election, Trump replied: "I wouldn't want to get into it, because for me that's very personal. The Bible means a lot to me but I don't want to get into specifics."

When pressed on whether he was an "Old or New Testament guy," Trump replied: "Probably equal. I just think the whole Bible is incredible."
