The man charged with the 4th December murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson comes from a well-established family deeply rooted in Baltimore's Italian Catholic community.

Before the shooting in New York City, Luigi Mangione, aged 26, posted about Christianity online.

On 18th April 2024 he shared an article highlighting Christianity's decline in the West.

"Horror vacui (nature abhors a vacuum)," Mangione's X post said. "relevant read, 'Christianity's decline has unleashed terrible new gods.' "

According to The National Catholic Reporter, his family has been a significant force in Maryland's economic, political, and civic life, with notable contributions to local Catholic institutions.

Following Mangione’s arrest, his cousin, Nino Mangione—a Republican member of the Maryland House of Delegates—released a statement on behalf of the family. The statement expressed shock and devastation, asking for prayers for all involved, including Thompson’s family.

Mangione’s paternal grandparents, Nicholas Bernard Mangione Sr and Mary, were prominent figures in Baltimore’s Catholic community.

They served on the board of trustees at Loyola University Maryland, where they helped fund the acquisition of the St. John’s Bible, which is permanently displayed at the university.

Nicholas Mangione Sr, a self-made businessman and philanthropist, was a significant figure in the Baltimore community before his death in 2008.

A former Navy veteran and real estate developer, he worked tirelessly to support various charities, including the Baltimore Opera Company.

Despite his family's struggles, they relied on local Catholic support, including receiving bags of flour from the church.
