Greens allegedly plan to ‘disestablish’ Church of England

by Anna Rees Green

The Green Party has allegedly hatched plans to “disestablish” the Church of England as Britain’s state denomination if it gets into power.

According to the Daily Mail, a Green Party document indicates they would “abolish” bishops in the House of Lords, and eradicate the Church of England’s representative in the House of Commons, a role currently held by Labour MP Marsha de Cordova.

The plans would separate Church and state, and remove the Prime Minister’s say – albeit nominal – in the election of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

“No person shall hold office in the state, or be excluded from any such office, by virtue of their or their spouse’s membership or non- membership of any religion or denomination of religion,” the document reportedly stated.

Whilst the Green Party currently have only five MPs, Hannah Spencer’s win in Gorton and Denton spelt a strong challenge to Labour’s reign.

Sources within Labour told Premier Christian News that the party has been rattled by the Greens’ growing popularity, and is bracing for a tough fight with May by-elections looming.

Premier has approached both the Green Party and the Church of England for further comment.
