Joyce Shelton from Stokesley near Middlesbrough marked her gold anniversary as a member of Mothers' Union with a trip to a local tattooist.
The 85 year old, who choose to have the emblem of the charity - overlapping letters m and u - tattooed onto her left ankle, said: "It took ten minutes and didn't hurt."
The Mothers' Union is an international organisation working with people of all faiths and none across 83 countries to promote family life, stable marriages and the protection of children.
Joyce's tattoo has now become a talking point among her friends and family, as well as her groups of friends at the local Mothers' Union group.
Joyce said: "There were a few raised eyebrows and they all gathered round to have a look."
"I might have been the first but I definitely won't be the last Mothers' Union member to visit his shop!"
