Government defends aid to countries where Christians are persecuted

by Hannah Tooley

Official statistics, looked at by the Telegraph, show UK money is sent to four out of five countries on Open Doors's World Watch List which documents attacks against Christians.

Open Doors World Watch List:

1. NORTH KOREA
2. SOMALIA
3. IRAQ
4. SYRIA
5. AFGHANISTAN
6. SUDAN
7. IRAN
8. PAKISTAN
9. ERITREA
10. NIGERIA

In the anti-persecution charity's list, North Korea is on top with Somalia ranked second. Somalia alone received £100 million in aid.

Speaking to Premier Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, the former Bishop of Rochester who is now president of Oxtrad, a charity supporting churches facing persecution, said: "Aid is a good thing for Britain to have a high profile in - I'm not at all opposed to that.

"But I think we have to make sure aid is properly targeted, we have to make sure for example it is not tied to British commercial interests and certainty not to aid in corruption.

"But where religious freedom in particular is concerned - I think Britain should be aware of the human rights situation."

He added: "I think the public does need to know where its money is going, but also there's another issue.

"Where Britain is using NGO's to provide aid, it must recognise the nature of those NGO's so that it should not impose conditions on them that are contrary to their beliefs for example.

"With Iraq it has been said again and again - that aid cannot be given to Christians in Iraq and aid agencies working with Christians in Iraq because it would be seen as discriminatory.

"Well I have seen what Christian churches in Iraq are doing, they're not just helping their own people, they're helping everybody."

Philip Davies, Conservative MP, said: "Many people will rightly be asking what is the purpose of aid money and why are we dolling out large amounts of cash to brutal regimes who show a complete disregard towards basic human rights?

"When the Government gives out taxpayers' money to other countries in aid or loans, it should have very clear conditions, but it appears that there are none."

He added that: "Over half of the 136 countries we gave money to in 2013 oppress and mistreat their citizens because of their religion or sexuality. This is unacceptable.

"We should be using aid to support countries and communities, build infrastructure and encourage inward investment.

"It is time for a radical overhaul of how we allocate aid."

The Prime Minister, David Cameron said in 2014 that Christianity is now the "most persecuted religion around the world" and stressed that Britain should not be ashamed to stand up for freedom of faith.

While critics suggest money is getting into the wrong hands, the government insists funds are often sent to groups looking to support those who are persecuted.

A DFID spokesperson told Premier: "British aid is tackling discrimination head on – to suggest otherwise is deeply misleading. DFID is working closely with our charity partners to help create more open and free societies.

"The truth is, stopping aid to these countries is counter-productive. It will simply cut support to persecuted men, women and children, and harm the future health, education and welfare of the world's poorest people.

"No person anywhere in the world should face persecution for their religious beliefs or sexual preferences, and the UK will proudly continue to tackle these injustices at home and abroad."

Andrew Hogg from Christian Aid , told Premier's News Hour: "The accountability and the desire to see where money is going is of ever greater importance, both for the Department for International Development and Agencies like Christian Aid - so it has to be as closely monitored as possible."

He added that: "Providing that we can show we are every bit as professional as a government audit would expect to see, they are increasingly inclined to make use of us - simply because it does make sense if you've got that kind of expertise, to put it to good use."
