Gold medallist breaks into gospel song after Olympic win

by Anna Rees Green

German shot putter Yemisi Ogunleye broke into worship after winning gold at Paris 2024.

Her final throw of 20 metres secured her the gold medal, and she used her post-win press conference interview to praise Jesus.

“My goal coming into these championships was 20 metres,” she said.

Prior to February 2024, she had never won a national, European or world championship medal.

Ogunleye said: "Some time ago, I was just praying and asking God what he wants to do with the Olympic Games. And He was like, 'We are going to get gold.’"

She added: "I did not have faith at that moment. But He kept on telling me. It sounds literally crazy, but I have seen it in front of my eyes, and I really started to have faith and the confidence that it is possible.”

The German-Nigerian was asked what was going through her head as she threw.

“After falling, I went back to my seat and sang called I Almost Let Go. It goes like this,” she said, before the media bank with some beautiful gospel vocals:

“I’m here today because God kept me

"I’m alive today because of his grace

"Oh he kept me, his mercy kept me

"So I won’t let go.”
