God TV withdraws claim that it's stopped suicides in Aboriginal communities

Christian television station GOD TV has withdrawn a claim that it had helped end suicides within indigenous communities in Western Australia.

The team had suggested making the channel available to Aboriginal communities had brought about a dramatic change.

"As far as we know, there has NOT been one suicide in any community that we have installed,' they said.

However, they're reported to have backtracked after concern was raised by co-chair of the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre, Gordon Marshall.

Speaking to ABC, he said whilst the channel was popular, it wasn't putting an end to suicide.

"Some people like God TV because if they're Christian, it helps them stay sober and stay healthy.

"But it's not stopping suicide. I think it's a bit false, and people thinking about funding it should be doing a bit more research to find out for themselves if it's true."

God TV is currently fundraising to move into more indigenous areas in Australia.
