'Glitter Ash Wednesday' planned for LGBT Christians

The New York based group - Parity - is planning the event as a way to show that LGBT people are a part of the church.

"This is a way for queer Christians and queer-positive persons of faith to say 'We are here,'" Marian Edmonds-Allen, Parity's executive director said, "It is also a way for other people to be a witness to that and be in solidarity with them."

Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent in many Christian denominations. Traditionally ashes are placed on the forehead by a priest as a sign of repentance.

Parity is calling on supporters of the cause to instead use glitter and ask their priests and pastors to over the glitter at their services.

The group's website says: "Offering glitter ashes will present an opportunity to breathe fresh life into your liturgy, recapture the surprise in the Christian message, and draw new people into your worship."
