Gay Christian rock star gives first interview since coming out

by Hannah Tooley

Trey Pearson, who was married and has two children, told tans he was not being true to himself in a letter in May.

Speaking to Fox News in his first interview he said: "[The response has been] overwhelmingly positive.

"It's been pretty awesome to see how many people have come around me to support me and show me love.

"I've been super grateful."

The musician told his wife and family six months before openly coming out.

He says his wife Lauren has been supportive the entire way through and the pair have "filed for disillusionment."

Pearson told Fox News: "Lauren has been crazy supportive and very much behind me.

"We were married 7 and a half years and it's been just as much a struggle for her as it has been for me.

"I think we both got to experience freedom to have this transparency and understanding in our relationship."

He added that some of his family were finding it harder to adapt but are keen to accept him.

"A lot of my family, from a more fundamentalist Christian side that have always believed [homosexuality] is a sin, they've been wanting to understand," he said.

"My dad showed up on my front porch when the letter came out and just hugged me for ten minutes.

"They're definitely trying."

The rock star said he was apprehensive about telling his fans about his sexuality.

He said: "I honestly didn't know how people would react.

"Anytime you post anything like this online, you realize there's just some mean people out there, but I wasn't too worried about that.

"[My story is] beautiful, and it's been about the grace that I've received from people around me, from my wife, from my family and just the sort of redemption I've been able to feel."

Trey Pearson said that he hopes that by coming out he can inspire people of all faiths and backgrounds to work as one and "stop teaching hate" in light of the attack that took place at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, over the weekend.
