'He's got some problems': Franklin Graham speaks out after Trump conviction

by Premier Journalist

Franklin Graham has spoken out about Donald Trump's election hopes after the former president was convicted for falsifying business records in relation to a hush-money payment made to an adult film actress.

Revd Graham, the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham and president of Christian humanitarian organisation Samaritan's Purse, has often spoken out in support of conservative ideas and values, but has stopped short of personally endorsing any presidential candidate.

He told Premier Christian News that the 45th president and convicted felon "has got some problems", but is still permitted to run for high office under the US Constitution.

"I didn't campaign for [Trump] in 2016 or in 2020," Graham said. "But I have supported many of his policies which benefitted the church. I'm very grateful for those policies."

Mr Trump is due to be sentenced on 11th July after being convicted on all of the 34 felony charges levelled against him. He faces a possible four-year prison sentence.

"He might go to jail, I don't know," Graham said. "But there's nothing in our constitution that prohibits a person from running for president from jail."

Revd Graham, who is about to embark on a preaching tour of the UK, urged prayer for the US political situation, which he described as "a mess".

"Our politics is going to be very interesting and fun to watch for the next few months," he said.

"It's constantly changing... we need to pray, because politically the United States is in a mess."
