Evangelist Franklin Graham has said the murder of US activist Charlie Kirk has “backfired,” claiming it has instead amplified the Gospel and inspired a new generation of Christians.
Speaking to The Christian Post, the Samaritan’s Purse CEO argued the assassination shows “the Left is wanting to… shut the mouths of anyone who’s willing to speak out.”
He added: “I hope this is going to raise up an army of young people who will take a stand for Jesus Christ, who are not afraid to speak out and not afraid that they’re going to be attacked or accused.”
Kirk, 31, was killed last week in Utah. Graham said his outspoken proclamation of faith has left a lasting mark: “Charlie’s death put a huge spotlight on this truth: that Jesus Christ is God’s Son… The opposite effect is taking place.”
Reports suggest church attendance surged in the immediate aftermath of Kirk’s death, a phenomenon some have dubbed “the Charlie effect.”
Graham said millions of people are now discussing the Gospel around the world.
Reflecting on younger generations, Graham said many are increasingly aware that “drugs and sex and alcohol don’t satisfy. There’s an emptiness in young people, and they’re searching. When Charlie said that Jesus Christ was everything to him, that was huge. He is going to be remembered for his faith.”
