Former Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino has given glory to God after being ordained as a pastor at an evangelical church in Brazil.
According to The Christian Institute Firmino, who was baptised in 2020, co-founded Manah Church in Macieo three years ago and has now taken on the role of a minister.
In a post on Instagram, Firmino shared that ever since his encounter with Christ, a strong desire to serve was ignited within him. Now, he feels a new calling and responsibility as he steps into his pastoral role.
The caption reads: "This church was BORN in the heart of God and we are extremely grateful for the privilege of witnessing up close all that the Lord has done."
Quoting Ephesians 3:20, Firmino wrote: “Now to him who is able to do infinitely more than all that we ask or think, according to his power that works within us.”
Firmino expressed his amazement at God’s grace, stating, “I’m astonished by the magnitude of God’s mercy towards us. He truly chooses the unlikely! Thank you, Jesus.”
Despite his new pastoral duties, Firmino remains a professional footballer with two years left on his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli.
A similar story of faith transformation was shared by former Crystal Palace and Barnsley forward Bruce Dyer in 2020. Dyer revealed how God rescued him from a life of substance abuse and despair, ultimately changing the course of his life.
By the age of 23, Dyer was battling depression and contemplating quitting football. However, after hearing his brother’s testimony of finding faith while in prison, Dyer said he "never looked back."
Now retired from football, Dyer has played a key role in establishing Love Life UK Church, an independent evangelical fellowship, where he serves as a pastor.
