Five out of eight Franklin Graham venues cancel his booking

by Cara Bentley

Evangelist Franklin Graham is still meant to be coming to the UK this year - but five out of the eight venues booked to have him speak have now cancelled.

The tour is meant to include: Glasgow, Newcastle, Sheffield, Milton Keynes, Liverpool, Newport (listed as Cardiff on website), Birmingham and London.

The FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield, Glasgow's Hydro venue and the ACC in Liverpool have all cancelled.

On Friday, the International Convention Centre Wales in Newport also cancelled their booking and there are questions over a potential booking at London's O2 Arena.

Jayne Bryant, Assembly Member for Newport West, said Graham has: "a long record of preaching hate, prejudice and intolerance."

The Arena Birmingham confirmed to website PinkNews that his appearance there had been cancelled too, with a spokesperson saying: "Following a review of The Graham Tour, Arena Birmingham has made the decision to no longer hold the scheduled event at the venue."

Graham, son of Billy Graham, has been criticised for his attitude towards the LGBTQ+ community and offensive comments.

In apparent denial of these circumstances, Graham wrote on Twitter on Saturday: "I’m looking forward to preaching the Gospel across the UK in late May & June. Hundreds of churches are praying & planning to be a part of these evangelistic outreaches. People everywhere are searching for something to fill the void in their lives. Jesus Christ is the answer."

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association told Premier this week: "We're excited the gospel is going to be preached and many lives are going to be changed," spokesman Reuben Morley said.

"No matter what the media says, we are confident that the tour is going ahead. We've been speaking to many church leaders on the ground and they are excited for what's to come."
