Film to be made about "Potato Jesus"

The painting became famous after a Spanish woman in her 80s worked to restore a 5th century fresco of Jesus painting, dubbed "Potato Jesus."

The small town of Borja, located in Zaragoza, Spain is home to the beloved "Ecce Homo", meaning "Beyond the Man" located in Sanctuary of Mercy Church.

After years of moisture damage, the fresco began to peel and paint flaked off the wall.

Local resident Cecilia Gimenez tried to repair the painting after allegedly getting permission from the church's priest.

Ms Gimenez was upset by the condition of the painting and tried to refurbish the work, but her attempts were coined one of "the worst art restoration projects of all time."

Critics of the artwork have renamed the fresco "Beyond the Monkey", but the gaff has brought thousands of tourists to the town to see the botched work, proving more financially valuable than the original.

The story of Ecce Homo will be turned into a comic opera by an American director set to premier in August.

A UK company is also producing its own film about the story.
