Female Christians "persecuted more than their male counterparts"

by Hannah Tooley

Release International has been holding a conference in London.

It heard from survivors of persecution from Eritrea, Egypt and Pakistan, who told the audience how their experiences range from being bullied in school to bombs going off at Christian festivals.

'Tabitha', 28, from Upper Egypt said that she first encountered persecution in school.

She said: "In the first day of the class the teacher came and asked, 'Who is Christian here?' and then a few people, they raised their hands up and she said, 'Okay, stay in the back of the class.'

"The back of the class where they are so far from the blackboard that they can't see the blackboard and they can't hear the teacher while he is speaking."

Pastor Waseem also shared his experience of when Christian women and their families were targeted in Pakistan, by a suicide bomber over the Easter weekend.

70 people were killed in the attack and more than 300 were maimed and injured - including those from other faith backgrounds.

He spoke about one of the children he comforted after the attack.

"Young Sam went with ball and bat to enjoy the Easter celebrations," he said.

"He was terribly hurt and he has ball bearings in his bladder."

He went on: "It was a very difficult time for people who have lost towards their loved ones to stand with them. And I am really grateful to you, brothers and sisters, you are with us, being persecuted with the Pakistani church."
