Faith leaders meet to discuss tackling extremism

by Hannah Tooley

Those gathered at the Church of England headquarters in Westminster will amongst other things look at whether faith groups should be given government funding to help combat extremism.

It's after Church of England bishops called for churches to be given more powers and money from the government to tackle various issues within society.

The All Faith Network for the United Kingdom organised the meeting, and it comes after Church of England bishops issued a letter ahead of the General Election in which they called for churches to be given powers and money tackle various issues within society.

Speakers include Rt Revd Graham James, Bishop of Norwich and Jewish blogger and activist Judy Keiner.

Sheikh Dr Muhammad Al-Hussaini, a fellow in Islamic studies at the Westminster Institute, is also taking part and is not in favour of the suggestion that faith groups should be given extra funding.

Speaking to Premier before the event, he said, "Until faith communities recognise their own wrong doings, their own abuses of power... I really don't feel churches and faith communities should be asking government or anybody for special privileges or more power or political clout in our democracy.
