Faith leaders make urgent call for generosity following Cyclone Idai

Dr Rowan Williams and Chief Imam Abdul Qayyam have been speaking after hundreds were killed and hundreds of thousands made homeless after Cyclone Idai left a trail of destruction across Africa.

Over £8 million was raised in the UK after the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) launched an appeal for the region but's it's thought much more is needed.

The DEC, which is made up of charities including CAFOD, Christian Aid, Islamic Relief, Tearfund and World Vision UK, is now calling on churches and other faith communities to raise funds.

Dr Rowan Williams, who's also chair of Christian Aid, said: "The cyclone that has swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe has left a trail of destruction. Hundreds have been killed, and the death toll keeps rising.

"The survivors urgently need our help. Hundreds of thousands have lost their homes, and crops and livestock have been wiped out just months before harvest. People have lost everything and are grieving for their loved ones.

"At a time of increasing disasters across the globe, it has never been more important for humanity to come together to support the most vulnerable. There is no better way of countering the rising climate of hatred and intolerance than a gesture of kindness to a stranger in need on the other side of the world. Let the response to this DEC Cyclone Idai Appeal be a beacon of hope for everyone. I urge you to support it as generously as you can."
