Erling Haaland donates historic Christian manuscript to hometown library

by Kelly Valencia

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has bought a rare Christian manuscript and donated it to the public library in his hometown of Bryne, Norway.

Haaland and his father, former footballer Alf-Inge Haaland, paid $134,000 - around £100,000 - for the Heimskringla, a late 16th-century collection of Viking sagas that documents medieval Norwegian society and the spread of Christianity in the country.

The manuscript, believed to have been created in 1594, is a copy of an earlier 13th-century work by an Icelandic scholar. It tells the story of King Olaf Haraldsson, who converted to Christianity and was later recognised as a saint by the Catholic Church.

The Haalands have donated the manuscript to the public library in Bryne.

Erling Haaland told Norwegian media: “I want the book always to lie open so that people can read about those who came from where I come from, from Bryne and Jæren."

He added: “I’ve been lucky enough to live out my dream through football, and I know not everyone gets that chance. Books give so many more people the chance to dream big, see new possibilities and find their own path.”

The Norwegian national has recently posted pictures of himself wearing a rosary, although he has so far made no public references to his faith.
