English Heritage: 800 Churches 'at risk'

Dwindling congregations, financial troubles and metal theft are putting the future of these churches in danger, according to the government body.

More than 4,000 buildings have also been identified as being in 'poor condition' by English Heritage but the buildings included in the register, which will be published later this week, are in need of urgent attention.

The new register will feature 805 Church of England parish churches, with a further 82 places of worship also included on the list.

English Heritage inspectors used architectural reports to carry out the studies on a spectrum of buildings dating from medieval times to the 20th century, which includes 14th century Grade II-listed Church of St James in Gloucestershire's Fretherne with Saul parish.

Speaking on Premier's News Hour, Diana Evans, head of places of worship advice at English Heritage, said: "Being on the register is an indication, very often, that the local community simply can't find the resources to look after this part of our national heritage, and that therefore wider resources are needed, and that we must all try and support them if we want to keep those buildings."
