England star Bukayo Saka's church offers prayers following online racist abuse

by Heather Preston

England player Bukayo Saka has been surrounded by prayers from his church in West London following a barrage of racial abuse online after missing a penalty in the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

The 19 year old Christian midfielder was targeted on social media along with fellow England players Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho for missing penalties in the 3-2 shoot-out.

Saka attended The Kingsborough Centre, Uxbridge, previously known as Kingsborough Family Church with his parents, before moving to be near Arsenal's training ground in Hertfordshire two years ago.

The Pentecostal church says it will be praying for Saka this week.

"The church will be praying for him. Prayer is not limited by distance and we do not need him to be here for us to pray for him," its pastor told the Telegraph.

UEFA has condemned the 'disgusting racial abuse' the England players have experienced whilst England manager Gareth Southgate called it 'unforgiveable'.

The Prime Minister is meeting with representatives from social media companies in Downing Street today to discuss how to prevent racist content being posted on their sites in the future.

Racist language was also graffitied onto a mural of player Marcus Rashford in Manchester following his missed penalty. The England star has said he can 'take critique of his performance all day long' but will never apologise for who he is.

The mural has since been almost entirely covered by messages of support.
