Egypt's Pope quits Facebook to save 'precious gift' of time

by Eno Adeogun

Pope Tawadros II told state-run Mena news agency: "Time is the most precious gift God gives us daily, and we must use it in a good way. The Christian must sanctify his time, and the monk leaves everything behind so that all of life becomes sanctified for God."

His decision comes as Facebook is set to introduce a new tool to monitor how much time a user spends on their app.

Rev Jules Middleton from Trinity Church Lewes, who also has her own blog, told Premier her reaction to Facebook's plan.

She said: "I'm a big social media fan and I can see all of the benefits for it, particularly for those of us who are Christians or in the Church and wanting to share the message of Jesus. But at the same time, I also recognise that it can be a really big time-waster."

Instagram will also be showing the amount of time users spend on its social media platform.

In a blog post, the companies collectively said: "We want the time people spend on Instagram and Facebook to be intentional, positive and inspiring.

"Our hope is that these tools give people more control over the time they spend on our platforms and also foster conversations between parents and teens about the online habits that are right for them."

Rev Middleton warned what could happen if people stay on social media for long durations.

"There is a danger that we kind of become voyeurs...into other people's lives and it's very easy to kind of be scrolling through what's happening in other people's lives and not really kind of actually genuinely taking an interest.

"But if we're using it for a particular purpose - for example, mine's really handy for staying in touch with extended family who I don't see very often...or if I want to share something as a message from the sermon that weekend... I think those are good uses.

"It's when we're just generally scrolling through that it becomes a bit of a waste of time."
