Don't judge single adopters says Christian charity

The number of single parents who adopted last year was 962, compared to 904 in 2017.

Experts believe the reasons for this are two fold, firstly, due to societal changes, making it more 'acceptable' for single parent families to adopt.

The second reason suggested is what is being called the 'Jolie effect' with single celebrities adopting children.

The findings have been welcomed by Dr Krish Kandiah, founder of Christian charity, Home for Good, which aims to make fostering and adoption a significant part of the life and ministry of the Church.

Speaking to Premier, he said: "We think, overall it is a fantastic thing and it gives us and the Church an opportunity to wrap around those families, whether they are single adopters or couples, because adoption is a tough thing for people to take on.

"Most of the children coming forward for adoption have had a pretty difficult life story so far.

"There are lots of children, over, 2,730 children just in England alone, waiting to be adopted.

"The longer these children wait, the worse their outcomes are. So it's fantastic that people are coming forward.

"In fact, Home for Good has had a large increase in the number of people coming forward, particularly in their 20s.

"Both single adopters and married couples are coming forward.

Some question whether single parents can provide a full and stable life compared to two-parent households.

Responding to the claim, Krish Kandiah said: "I've got a good friend, who sadly become a single adopter because his wife has recently passed away.

"He's done a brilliant job and in incredibly difficult circumstances and what we should do as a Church is not judge people for being single and raising kids, but instead support them and offer them the help that they need."
