Domestic abuse 'taboo within Christian communities', says charity.

Recently, the Archbishop of Canterbury commended the work of the charity, which claims the issue 'still carries stigma' within church communities.

In the UK, two women every week at the hands of a violent partner.

Co-director, Mandy Marshall, says it happens in our churches too:

"Particularly in a Christian environment, there's so much pressure to keep the marriage together and to be seen to be having a good marriage that the shame of not having a good marriage can be very overwhelming.

"Particularly if they're presenting a vision in church of something which is different to what is going on behind closed doors."

She goes on to explain that it's not always about physical violence:

"Sometimes it's spiritual abuse, emotional abuse, social abuse, financial abuse...

"We've had women come to us and say that in order to feed the kinds they've had to sleep with their husbands, as a form of prostitution almost, because he's restricted the amount of money that she gets.

"The church is well placed to serve the community at so many levels, but domestic abuse has somehow slipped on its radar.

"Domestic abuse must no longer be a taboo subject that the church is reluctant to talk about".

'Restored' has produced a resource pack for churches, which is available to download free of charge via their website.

There's also more information on how to get advice and support, whether you're a victim of abuse, or you're concerend about your own behaviour towards a partner:
