Pictures have emerged of priests hearing confessions on the pavements of Paris as crowds gathered in Paris for Pope Leo XIV's open-air Mass this week.
The Pontiff concluded his four-day visit to the country, attracting huge crowds.
Clergy sat at the roadside along the Champs-Élysées on Saturday while pilgrims waited for the Pope, in scenes that spread widely on social media. The Vatican estimates 800,000 people filled the streets around Place de la Concorde.
Confession is usually heard in a confessional, typically a wooden cubicle, though priests can hear it elsewhere.
The images come from France, one of Europe's most secular countries, where hundreds of clergy were executed during the Revolution. The night before, about 80,000 young people packed the Stade de France. On Sunday, more than 150,000 attended Mass in Lourdes.
It is the first official papal visit to France since 2008. Leo has linked a rise in baptisms to God's work, though clerical abuse also loomed large on the trip.
