Dates announced for Pope's visit to Egypt

by Aaron James

The pontiff will be in the country from April 28-29th. He'll be denouncing Islamist terrorism and highlighting the persecution of Christians at Al-Azhar University and Mosque in the capital Cairo, one of the most senior institutions for Muslim thought in Egypt.

He'll also be speaking to the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar mosque, Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed el-Tayyib, as well as others on how to tackle the issues.

Mohamed el-Tayyib visited Pope Francis at the Vatican last year, and it's thought his invitation to Egypt spanned from their time together.

The pontiff will also visit the Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Pope Tawadros II, in solidarity with persecuted believers in Egypt.

It's after 23 Christians were murdered at a church next to St Peter and St Paul's Coptic Cathedral in Cairo in December last year by an Islamist suicide bomber.

This year there's also been a spate of murders of Coptic Christians, leading many to flee the El-Arish region of Egypt where many of the killings happened.
