A new study suggests Americans who regularly read the Bible are far more likely to report a strong sense of identity.

The American Bible Society’s latest State of the Bible USA report, based on interviews with more than 2,600 adults, found that 63 percent of “scripture-engaged” respondents had a strong sense of identity, compared with just 38 percent among those with little or no Bible use.

Daily readers were the most confident, with 69 percent saying they knew who they were and what they valued.

“Identity levels are strong among people who practice religion, and not just Christianity,” said John Farquhar Plake, the society’s Chief Innovation Officer.

“Something about core beliefs, shared worship, and common culture gives people a better sense of who they are.”

The report also highlighted generational differences: only 30 percent of Gen Z men reported a strong sense of identity, compared with more than half of Baby Boomers. Researchers concluded that “as we age, we learn more about who we are, what we believe, and what we consider important.”

Plake added: “When people not only read the Bible but build their lives on it, they’re far more likely to have a strong sense of identity.”
