Cream teas to 'hymns and Pimms': C of E predicts tens of thousands to mark coronation at churches

by Sophie Drew

The Church of England says they expect tens of thousands more visitors to flock to local churches this weekend as places of worship find creative ways to engage with the Coronation.

Thousands of churches will screen the event live, taking advantage of special licence exemptions from the BBC to witness Most Rev Justin Welby anoint and crown Their Majesties.

The range of events is exhaustive, from cream teas in the Barming Heath to a flower festival in the Diocese of Leeds.

In Wokingham, All Saints Church is hosting a picnic in the park, whilst St Michael and All Angels in Eaton Bishop is offering "Hymns and Pimms" to those looking to mark the occasion a little differently.

The Diocese of Norwich has seen the highest number of events registered so far, with over 160 being added to AChurchNearYou.com – a website that allows users to find services and events near them using postcode or geo-location search.

The Bishop of Newcastle, Rt Rev Helen Ann Hartley, said: "It's exciting to see communities up and down the country preparing to mark the Coronation in their own ways.

"Like at Westminster Abbey, services of worship will be at the heart of these celebrations, which give us an opportunity not only to pray for the King and Queen but for communities across the UK and the Commonwealth they serve."

It's not too late for churches to add their own events at AChurchNearYou.com. The service is free to use and available to anyone interested in attending a service or event – whether or not they have been to church before.
