Conservative MP says possible second national lockdown would be based on 'misleading data'

by Chantalle Edmunds

Sir Desmond Swayne has told Premier that he's horrified that any further national lockdown measures could come into force.

The Conservative MP for New Forest West said that the last lockdown not only hurt the economy but was also detrimental to the country's health: "Twenty six thousand people are estimated to have died from not receiving the treatment that they would otherwise have had if the NHS had been available and not almost wholly taken over with the COVID epidemic."

He also said the government was in danger of overestimating the trajectory of the disease.

He cited 275,000 people who travelled and queued for tests on Tuesday and claimed only 1.4 percent had a positive result.

The government admitted on Friday it's considering an England-wide lockdown to try and tackle the surge in new infections.

It's being reported a two week shutdown could happen in October - although schools and most workplaces would stay open.

On Friday evening, the Department of Health announced the highest number of daily coronavirus cases across the UK since May.

More than 4,300 new infections have been recorded, along with a further 27 deaths.

Sir Desmond went on to argue that the Office of National Statistics estimated in June that 2.4 percent of cases were false positives. He also accused the government of using a modelling system of the disease that is "wholly mistaken".

The New Forest West MP has argued instead for local lockdowns that are already in place in parts of the country.

Lancashire, West Yorkshire and parts of the Midlands are among the latest areas in England to face new coronavirus restrictions.

In his own county constituency of Hampshire, Sir Desmond said the infection rate was six per one hundred thousand people and therefore the area did not need to be subject to any national lockdown measures.
