Clergy encouraged to embrace 'Movember'

Thousands will take part in Movember this year, and organisers want clergy and their congregations to sign up to the Holy Mo Challenge.

Last year, £30,000 was raised by 425 people representing churches and it is hoped this record will be toppled.

Laura Mair, head of corporate engagement at Movember, said: "Our vision is to have an everlasting impact on men's health, and the Movember moustache puts a fun twist on this serious issue. We were bowled over by how engaged churches and other faith groups were in 2013. It was an incredible achievement to generate such support and finance in the first year of a new challenge and we're excited to see even more impressive clerical follicles this year."

Movember is an annual, month-long moustache-growing charity event run by the Movember Foundation. The groups says it is about bringing back the moustache, having fun, and raising awareness and funds for men's health: specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's mental health.

To date, more than four million participants have raised over £345 million and in 2013 over one quarter of a million signed up to show their support in the UK.

Teams and individuals can enter themselves into the 'Holy Mo Network Challenge', ranked alongside other teams that are all competing for the bragging rights of being named champions of the Holy Mo.

The title is currently held by 'Mary's Hairies' from St Mary's Church in Nantwich, who raised the most amount of sponsorship during last year's month of the Mo.

The work of Movember is looking to transform global research in the treatment of men's health and through its UK partners, Prostate Cancer UK and the Institute of Cancer Research, provide support and care for those directly impacted by the diseases.
