Churches left damaged by Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin

by Alex Collett

Strong winds and heavy rain have had their toll on churches across the UK.

The battering of Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin have caused damage to churches across the country.

A church in Brighton and Somerset have been badly affected.

The spire of St Thomas' Church in Wells in Somerset came crashing to the ground, after it was brought down by heavy winds.

The spire was constructed in 1857 and people caught the moment when it wobbled and then toppled from the church.

Thankfully no one was hurt during the incident.

Fire crews were also called to reports of "loose lead" at risk of falling from St Michael's and All Angels Church in Powis Road, Brighton.

The 162-year-old church had "six foot pieces of loose lead" which fire services tried to reach but were unable to using their aerial ladder platforms.

All three storms over the past week left almost one-and-a-half million homes without power.

There are now also huge concerns for residents along the River Severn, with fears heavy rainfall could cause the banks to burst.

The Environment Agency says there's 'no guarantee' temporary barriers along the River Severn will hold.

Residents most at risk are asked to turn power supplies off.
