Church's welcome to Syrian refugees: "The weather may be cold but the welcome will be warm"

The first group of around 100 touched down at Glasgow Airport on Tuesday afternoon.

Revd Sally Foster-Fulton, convener of the Church and Society Council of the Church of Scotland, said: "The weather may be cold but I am sure the welcome will be warm.

"It is our huge privilege as a nation to offer deep hospitality to this first group of Syrian refugees."

The refugees have arrived as part of the UK's plans to re-settle 20,000 by 2020. They'll now make their way to various locations across the country - a large number are being relocated to the Isle of Bute.

Speaking on Premier's News Hour on Tuesday, Revd Owain Jones from the United Church in Rothesay said the refugees will be warmly welcomed.

"We've got space for people," he said, "they're human beings who are in need and who will fit into our community".

Downing Street has refused to specify exactly how many refugees were arriving this week but said they had undergone "rigorous" security checks before boarding the plane.

A total of 1,000 will arrive before Christmas.
