The Orthodox Church in Greece says it will send an official letter of protest to the Orthodox Archbishop of America, after he baptised the children of a celebrity gay couple.
Archbishop Elpidophoros of America baptised the son and daughter of Dundas, a fashion designer who has worked with artists such as Beyoncé and Ciara, and his partner Bousis, the co-founder and image Director of DUNDAS - a luxury fashion brand the couple started in 2017.
During a ceremony in Athens, the couple baptised their non-identical twin children earlier this month.
But in a statement on its website, the governing Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church said it would complain to the US church leader and to the head of the world's Orthodox Christians, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, in Turkey.
Neither Greece nor the Greek Orthodox Church allow same-sex unions. The country only allows same-sex couples to enter into legal cohabitation agreements.
Although Archbishop Elpidophoros has not publicly responded to the Greek church's objection, his official Twitter account featured an excerpt from a 2nd July 2022 speech in which he spoke out about the need for religion to heal divisions in society.
"Every person, no matter who they are, or what they have done - for better or for worse - is worthy of God's love and if they are worthy of God's love, then they are worthy of our love, too," Elpidophoros said.
"The Church will never reject anyone on the basis of their personhood."
