Church of England accused of discrimination over lesbian wedding refusal

by Aaron James

Janie and Lisa Davey-Collins (above, left and right) had invited Revd Heather Aston from St Mawgan in Meneage Church in Helston, Cornwall to officiate a wedding at their home in Manaccan in March.

Revd Heather and the Diocese of Truro refused, on the grounds that both morally and legally the Church of England is unable to perform same-sex weddings.

The Church of England has maintained that marriage is between a man and a woman, and it was also specifically exempt from 2013's same-sex marriage legislation.

Lisa Davey-Collins said: "I think this is discrimination.

"We can go to the local church and attend services but our marriage can't be blessed there.

"I really don't understand it. I went to gay wedding in London about 15 years ago at a church."

Revd Aston told Metro: "I would be very happy to pray with the family and offer pastoral support, but am not able to offer a public and formal blessing."
