Church in Wales condemns Trump over Greenland threats

by Anna Rees Green

The Church in Wales has joined fellow European Anglican and Lutheran congregations in condemning Donald Trump’s threats on Greenland.

The Porvoo Communion comprises Anglican and Lutheran leaders across fifteen nations, including Wales and Greenland.

“We feel compelled by our bonds of shared faith, hope and love to support our sisters and brothers, through our prayerful communion in Christ Jesus, in the power of the Spirit,” the church said.

It joined the Communion in affirming Greenlanders’ right to determine their own future.

“This is a question of human rights, dignity, and respecting international laws and treaties. We are a small people, but we are not invisible,” said Greenlandic Bishop, Paneeraq Siegstad Munk. “We have language, culture, ancestors, children, and a future tied to this place. Greenland is not land to be bought.”

The Church in Wales said it is undivided in its “solidarity” with the territory and encouraged “peaceful dialogue” on the international stage.
