Church in Bristol closed after fears of unstable spire

by Alex Collett

A Bristol church which dates back to the 14th Century has closed for safety reasons over fears for it's spire.

For 700 years, St John's Church in Bristol has been part of the city centre.

The Church Conservation Trust says it's closure was a temporary measure while structural investigations are carried out.

The Church Conservation Trust went onto say: "We are working with contractors and specialists to ensure we can raise the necessary funds to make the repairs and to [re]open the church."

"We understand this may be disappointing to visitors."

"Following a period of monitoring, we have become concerned about the structural stability of the top of the spire and we are therefore conducting further investigation to identify causes and the best approach to the repairs."

On the St John on the Wall's Facebook page they posted a picture of two men repairing the spire, saying: "Rather you than me mate!!

"Brave and skilled contractors strapping the spire awaiting mortar repairs at St John on the Wall, Bristol."

A date for reopening has not yet been announced.
