Church group brands Niger Farage "pernicious" over race law comments

In the programme 'Things We Won't Say About Race That Are True', which is screened next week, Mr Farage told the former head of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, Trevor Phillips that UKIP would scrap much of the legislation designed to prevent racial discrimination in work.

Jonathan Cox, deputy director Citizens UK, a coalition of community groups and churches accused Nigel Farage of being "pernicious", speaking Premier's 'News Hour', he said: "These sorts of comments being articulated un-does many years of hard work by people; many from within the churches who fought hard to try and prevent racial discrimination in the work place."

Downing Street has described his comments as "deeply concerning", while Labour branded them "shocking".

Mr Farage has since insisted the comments reflected an improvement in race relations, meaning parts of the existing law were no longer needed.

Mr Farage released a statement released shortly after the furore over his comments blew up on Thursday, he said: "My comments to Trevor Phillips were lauding the progress of race relations and equality in this country. Britain's media should be proud of this fact instead of trying to do it down.

"Ukip is the only party that is suggesting that Britain's employers should be free to employ British workers, regardless of creed or colour. It wasn't that long ago that the Labour Party called for 'British jobs for British workers'.

"And I suggest the real racists in our society are those who hear me say `British' and think `white'. I'm the only leader arguing for Britain's employers to favour British workers, no matter what their colour.

"And I must say, given the unemployment rates amongst young people, I'm now the only party leader standing up for them, black, white, or otherwise."
