Christian organisation Church Action on Poverty has labelled government cuts to disability benefits “immoral”.
The Family Resources Survey has recently revealed that one in ten UK households lives in food insecurity.
Church Action on Poverty have responded, saying that slashing social security benefits is to blame.
“Westminster politicians have been steadily dismantling Britain’s cherished social security system instead of bolstering it,” the organisation said.
“The Government response must be to reverse those damaging trends, not to accelerate them… Ending poverty needs to be a national priority. Instead this Government is singling out disabled people for swingeing cuts, while allowing far richer people to bear little or no burden.”
In March, the Office for Budget Responsibility confirmed that around £6.4 billion will be cut from health and disability benefits by 2029.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves insists the measures are a bid to fix economic shortfall left by the previous government.
“This government inherited a broken system,” she said. “The Labour Party is the party of work. We believe that if you can work, you should work. But if you can’t work, you should be properly supported.”
Disabled representatives at Church Action on Poverty warn that they will be plunged below the breadline under the new measures.
“Labour said they would put disabled people at the heart of everything they do,” said a representative. “But instead, they’ve shoved us to the very edges.”
