Christians urged to pray for both candidates in US election race

by Hannah Tooley

Christina Rees, American religious commentator and the former chair of Women and the Church (WATCH), told Premier it is vital to pray for both Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate and Donald Trump, the Republican candidate.

She told Premier's News Hour: "We pray for them both - for God's wisdom and discernment, God's perspective on how to lead the great country of America.

"Please God, fill them, use them and inspire them as they undertake their duties."

Christina Rees told Premier's News Hour she is disappointed Republican Donald Trump is viewed in a positive light by some Christians in the USA despite his derogatory attitudes and comments.

She said: "He seems to be able to get away by an attitude of 'hey, that's not who I am now' and yet in other things he's said about Hillary Clinton, he holds her to account for every little bit she's ever got wrong.

"His brazenness somehow overrides his extreme sexism."

In the last debate Trump defended a 2005 video recording in which he was heard making lewd comments about women, describing his remarks as "locker room talk".

His Democratic rival Mrs Clinton said the comments made by her Republican rival in the recording represented "exactly who he is".

Christina Rees told Premier why the controversial Christian appeals to some voters: "He speaks at a very, very understandable, basic level.

"He's very clear and he's playing on people's fears about the way life is now in America.

"Here is a man who is fresh, tells it like it is and at least we know where we stand with him."

The pair finished by answering what they admired about one another.

Clinton said: "I respect his children. His children are incredibly able and I think that says a lot about Donald."

Trump said: "I will say this about Hillary - she doesn't quit, she doesn't give up. I tell it like it is. She's a fighter."

One of the candidates will be declared the next president of the United States on 8th November.
