Christians more free to evangelise than they think, say charities

by Hannah Tooley

The resource, called Speak Up, has been created by the Lawyers' Christian Fellowship and the Evangelical Alliance.

It shows believers how the law protects Christians when they speak about their faith both publicly and privately.

Dave Landrum from the Evangelical Alliance tells Premier some Christians have been worried to share the Gospel.

He said: "There's been a perception... our freedoms are being squeezed, and they have been squeezed in different ways.

"So we wanted to address this, we got some legal experts together to explore what our freedoms are, to share Jesus in private, public and the workplace."

"In fact what the research and the resource shows is that we've probably got more freedoms than most countries have in the world.

"If we don't exercise those freedoms then we've got no one to blame if they wither on the vine as it were."

Mark Barrell, executive director at the Lawyers' Christian Fellowship, added: "Sometimes it seems as though we live in a society where it is increasingly difficult to share our faith, and hostility can seem not too far away when we do.

"There has also been the occasional situation when talking about Jesus has led a Christian into legal trouble.

"Yet we also live in a society where the law provides very substantial protection for our freedom to speak about our faith in Christ, and it's a society that is multi-ethnic and plural."
