Christians go head-to-head in EU debate

by Hannah Tooley

Both sides of the argument were represented at Woking United Reformed Church, with around 200 people attending the event.

Before debate:
Remain 50%
Leave 22%
Undecided 28%

After debate:
Remain 58%
Leave 28%
Undecided 14%

Speakers included Sir Simon Hughes, Gary Streeter MP, Adrian Hilton and Brendan Chilton.

Sir Simon Hughes, president of Christians for Europe UK and Remain campaigner, said it is about looking out for the interests of all Europeans.

He said: "As Christians, we have a bigger responsibility than just looking after ourselves, and I think it's an opportunity for us to say this imperfect organisation has the potential to build solidarity and change the world and that we are going to be able to influence it more from the inside."

Both sides debated immigration as well as sovereignty, borders and immigration.

Out campaigners say European farming policy wastes lots of money on bureaucracy, however, Remain campaigners say 73% of UK farming exports go to the EU.

In voters also argue that leaving the EU would see energy bills rise by £500 million and that Britain's energy security is stronger as part of the EU because it negotiates as a large bloc, but Out voters say the EU's environmental regulation is an unnecessary burden on business and pushes up energy prices.

Speakers:
*Remain:
Sir Simon Hughes - Former-Lib Dem deputy leader and president of Christians for Europe
Gary Streeter MP - Conservative MP & Chair of Christians in Parliament
* Leave:
Adrian Hilton - Blogs for Archbishop Cranmer and co-chair of Christians for Britain
Brendan Chilton - General Secretary of Labour Leave

Adrian Hilton, co-chair of Christians for Britain, told Premier he is voting to leave because he thinks the EU pushes a secular agenda.

He said: "We will come to a point where even our state schools daren't hold a Bible, because it doesn't want to hold a Koran and therefore the Guru Granth Sahib [Sikh scripture] has to go as well, in the name of enlightened liberalism - we are creating this vast secular space."
